Congressman John Spratt this month began raising funds for his 2008 campaign with a Washington event attended by a number of supporters, including House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer of Maryland.
"John Spratt has helped to make the Democratic Party the party of fiscal responsibility," Hoyer said, "and Americans are fortunate to have him as chairman of the House Budget Committee."
Spratt said his goal is to "balance the budget and at the same time protect the good programs Americans depend on."
