Spratt Introduces Presidential Candidates at Jefferson Jackson Dinner

04/29/07

Washington - U.S. Rep. John Spratt (D-SC) introduced the 2008 Democratic presidential candidates at the 2007 Jefferson Jackson Dinner. The dinner was held on Friday, April 27, at the Columbia Metropolitan Convention Center ballroom.

“As a life-long Democrat, I always look forward to the Jefferson Jackson Dinner and the State Convention, and to being part of the party that looks like America,” said Spratt.

“In last year’s elections, we swept much of the country and won back both houses of Congress. We did not know how glum we were until we won the majority, but we were prepared. Within the first hundred hours in the House, we raised the minimum wage for the first time in nine years, lowered the interest rates on student loans, initiated new programs to develop alternative fuels, approved federal funding for stem cell research, and made ‘pay-go’ a rule of the House. We are resolved to show the people that unlike the do-nothing Congress before us, this is a working Congress with their interests at heart.”

The South Carolina Democratic Party and South Carolina State University hosted the first-in-the-South presidential primary debate at 7:00 PM, Thursday, April 26, 2007. The Orangeburg debate was broadcast live on MSNBC and local NBC affiliates. The Party’s annual state convention was held on Saturday, April 28, 2007 at the Columbia Metropolitan Convention Center exhibit hall.
