Jane Stacy Spratt is an educator, a community leader, an artist, and, above all, a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother to Lily, Jack, Max, and Grace. Born and raised on a farm in Filbert, South Carolina, Jane first met "Johnny" in the 8th grade at York Junior High School, and they have been married for 38 years.
Jane says the values they share brought them together. "We are a lot alike. We both want to be a part of the community and to be a part of something beyond ourselves. We also both had wonderful parents; and a lot of their values were handed down to us: hard work, honesty, kindness, love, and inclusiveness. And we heard a similar message in the Presbyterian churches we grew up in. We learned and heard often, 'Do unto others as you would have them do unto you' and 'Love your neighbor as yourself.' And at least some of that became part of us."
After graduating from York High School in 1960, Jane earned a BA in history from Winthrop in 1964. She taught English and history to 7th graders and earned a MAT in history from Smith in 1966. In 1968, Susan, the first of three daughters, was born.
"Raising Susan, Sarah, and Catherine has been the most wonderful part of our lives. Watching them grow and move on with their lives and families continue to bring us a lot of happiness," said Jane.
Active in her community, Jane has volunteered with several local organizations. She was a Pink Lady at Divine Savior Hospital and Nursing Home in York, taught Sunday School and sang in the choir at York's First Presbyterian Church, served as president of the PTA, was a member of the executive board of York County Nature Museum, and served on the York County Community Foundation and YMCA regional and executive boards.
Jane enjoys painting, sculpture, and collage. "I have shows, sell my work, and win some awards," she says. "But with the election coming up, I'll spend lots of energy and time supporting John in his reelection bid. I think he's absolutely the best."
