ROCK HILL, SC – The John Spratt Campaign announced today that the South Carolina Fraternal Order of Police endorsed John Spratt for re-election to Congress at its state conference last month in Columbia. The vote was unanimous.
“This organization is the voice of those who dedicate their lives to protecting and serving our communities day by day, around the clock,” said Spratt. “I am grateful for their endorsement, and in Congress, they will continue to have my enthusiastic support.”
Spratt has long been a strong supporter of law enforcement. In 1994, Spratt helped to pass a crime bill that included COPS - Community Oriented Policing Services – to put more police on the beat in communities nationwide.
“The COPS program has been a big success, and a big plus for South Carolina,” Spratt said.
The program, run by the Justice Department, has funded more than 1,000 new police officers and sheriffs deputies in South Carolina. It has also directly benefitted some 203 local and state law enforcement agencies in the state, awarded $7.4 million to add 70 school resource officers to improve safety at the state’s public schools, and awarded $27.3 million for crime-fighting technologies, allowing officers to spend more time on the streets of South Carolina fighting and preventing crime through timesaving technology, information-sharing systems, and improved communications equipment.
The Fraternal Order of Police is dedicated to the advancement and protection of law enforcement officers, the promotion of officer benefits, and the fostering of enforcement of law and order. It is the world’s largest organization of sworn law enforcement officers, with more than 310,000 members in more than 2,100 lodges.
